Bronislaw Malinowski played two roles at once. He presented himself as a revolutionary in contrast to Edward Westermarck’s more conservative leanings. But he also viewed himself as Westermarck’s disciple. Their correspondence testifies to friendship. An intellectual paradigm shift is the result of several agents, their cooperation and conflict. Personal and intellectual relations, including competition within Malinowski’s own generation, create a dynamic mix.
