První text se snaží vymezit střední Evropu z hlediska kulturního vývoje a historických souvislostí celého regionu a představit ji jako svébytnou soucást evropské civilizace. Druhá studie demonstruje na celém spektru textů a výpovědí způsob nazírání na Rusko a Rusy v českém veřejném prostoru a snaží se s tímto nazíráním polemizovat. Ve třetí kapitole se autor zamýšlí nad dosavadním vývojem po listopadu 89, poměrem českého a obecně středoevropského prostoru k tzv. Západu a snaží se vymezit klíčové principy naší současné identity i její perspektivy. eng The Forgotten Island. The West, Russia, Central Europe and the Question of Our Identity In three studies, the monograph The Forgotten Island addresses the question of our contemporary identity and its historical roots. The first text attempts to define Central Europe in terms of the cultural development and historical context of the entire region and to present Central Europe as a distinct part of European civilisation. The second study demonstrates, through the entire spectrum of texts and testimonies on the way Russia and Russians are viewed in Czech public space and seeks to challenge this perception. In the third chapter, the author reflects on the developments after November 89, the relationship between Czech and Central European space to the so-called West and tries to define the key principles of our contemporary identity and its perspectives. The book combines a scholarly and essayistic style and makes use of a wide range of texts and sources, which it analyses, broadly comments on and supplements personal insights.
