eng	The role, image and responsibilities of the midwife in Bohemia (19th and 20th Century	In Czech countries, the nineteenth century was a crucial period of consolidation of midwifery. Although their education and situation were far from perfect, midwifery was already included in legislation to control medical practice. As the century progressed, the role, image and responsibilities of the midwives became more and more specified, demands placed on them get increasingly restrictive – as is the case of the manuals and handbooks destined for this professional group (let’s put reality aside…). This paper focuses on the analysis of about twenty midwives’ manuals and handbooks (1804 – 1932) which present changes of the ideal image of midwifery during a period of about 130 years.	19th Century; midwives; textbooks; delivery practices
