The aim of the paper will be to present the main features of the discussion about birth control in Czechoslovakia in the first half of the 20th century and try to answer the questions, why efforts to legalize abortion and disseminate information about contraception have not gain social or political support. In search of answers, I will focus primarily on finding connections between the birth control movement and the feminist movement, further on the potential influence of eugenic ideas, and finally on the role of doctors in the discussion about reproductive health of the individual and the nation. contraception; birth control; medicine; 20th century; Czechoslovakia
