eng	Birth control in Czechoslovakia in the first half of the 20th century	In the first half of the 20th century, the issue of fertility regulation became an integral part of social debates in many European countries. Individuals and organizations tried to inform about contraception, which represented way to prevent pauperisation of the population, or to maintain the purity of the race. In many countries this interest about contraception resulted in social reform movement. Also, in Czechoslovakia, soon after its establishment in 1918, birth control began to be discussed in public. Physicians, demographers, philosophers, clergy, politicians or representatives of feminist organizations expressed their attitude to birth control. But birth control movement, such as we know from the USA, England or Germany, was not formed in Czechoslovakia. The aim of the paper will be to present the main features of the contraceptive discussion in Czechoslovakia in the first half of the 20th century and try to at least partially answer the questions, why there was no birth control movement here and whether the absence of this movement, are related to the specific character of Czech society or it is a feature common to other Eastern European countries.
