eng What Was Lyotard Afraid Of? In this talk, I return to Lyotard’s famous book The Postmodern Condition, attempting to make clear that: (i) the books aim is to be descriptive rather than normative. It literally is a report on the state of “knowledge” in contemporary society. (ii) Lyotard’s view of the locality of knowledges, is something very far from a plea for relativism. It is rather an attempt to make clear what the foundations of knowledge are in a state of increasing specialization that characterizes contemporary sciences. (iii) Show that given that knowledges are local, and require specialization, all attempts to overwrite that locality are political and possibly dangerously totalizing.
