eng What is the Point of Talking about Performatives? J.L. Austin is primarily known as one of the leading philosophers of the school called “ordinary language philosophy” and as the inventor of the performative/constative distinction, which in turn gave rise to speech act theory. In this talk I problematize the received view of what Austin wanted to achieve by introducing the performative/constative distinction. Rather than trying to establish two distinct linguistic categories, I argue that Austin is pushing us to show precisely how the view that we can divide our world into two halves – one factual, possible to explicate descriptively, the other one moral – is mistaken.
