Austin is primarily known as one of the leading philosophers of the school called “ordinary language philosophy” and as the inventor of the performative/constative distinction, which in turn gave rise to speech act theory. In this talk I problematize the received view of what Austin wanted to achieve by introducing the performative/constative distinction. Rather than trying to establish two distinct linguistic categories, I argue that Austin is pushing us to show precisely how the view that we can divide our world into two halves – one factual, possible to explicate descriptively, the other one moral – is mistaken.
