eng Test the West: Transformations of Central European Ideas about Belonging to the West; příspěvek na konferenci “Cultures in Times of Transition – Central Europe in Transition” In each Central and Eastern European country, social consciousness has been undergoing some dramatic and some less visible changes since 1989. Based on samples of public statements and pronouncements made in then Czechoslovakia and later Czech Republic on the one hand and in mainly the eastern parts of Germany on the other hand, I shall compare similarities and differences in public imaginings of “the West”. Using deictic perspective, I will show the various ways in which the idea of belonging to the West has been utilized in public discourses for various social and political goals by different groups of population in the two countries twenty six years ago and today.
