cze Obraz pohanství v době osvícenství: od idolatrie k sekulárnímu konceptu polytheismu Článek se zabývá konceptem pohanství, který je ve své podstatě teologický. V době osvícenství se pojem pohanství používal k označování ne-abrahámovských náboženství. Sloužil též k vysvětlení a vyřešení tématu plurality náboženství v době po hlavním proudu reformace a objevu nových zemí za oceánem. Tento článek se zaměřuje na tři osvícenská témata ve vysvětlování existence pohanství a jeho role v dějinách náboženství: 1) původ idolatrie, 2) povaha bohů a 3) povaha pohanského uctívání. Tento článek argumentuje, že úvahy osvícenských filosofů a badatelů, zejména deistů, týkající se pohanství nebyly žádými vědeckými diskusemi, jak se často traduje, ale ve své podstatě byly stále velmi hluboko ukotveny v křesťanské teologii. Článek je rozdělen do čtyř částí. První část představuje obecný pohled na relevantní diskuse o náboženství v 17. století. Druhá část se zaměřuje na zakladatele anglického deismu Herberta z Cherbury a představuje jeho promýšlení pohanství. Třetí část ukazuje následovníky Herberta z Cherbury. Čtvrtá část představuje Davida Huma a jeho konceptualizaci pohanství. Článek argumentuje, že interní teologické problémy 17. a 18. století daly vznik specifickému konceptuálnímu jazyku, ve kterém se přemýšlelo a diskutovalo pohanství. Tento jazyk byl později převzat ve 20. a 21. století novopohany. Výsledkem článku je argument, že v jakémkoli studiu fenoménu, který se dnes nazývá pohanství nebo novopohanství nás současný rámec myšlení nutně vede k pokládání teologických otázek a odpovědí. Výsledkem pak je, že studovaný fenomén zůstává nepřístupný, protože celá diskuse o něm je stále uvězněná v teologickém rámci myšlení. pohanství; deismus; osvícenství; euhemerismus; polytheismus; idolatrie; novopohanství
eng The Image of Paganism in the Age of Reason: From Idolatry towards a Secular Concept of Polytheism This article argues that the concept of “paganism,” though originally theological in nature, came to be used in the Enlightenment and its secular thought as a term for non-Abrahamic religions. Discussions on paganism were conducted in an environment where concerns about religious plurality had become central. As such, these discussions, and their subject—paganism, also served as a means to find solutions for concerns about religious plurality. This article will focus on three components of the discussion on paganism: (i) the origin of idolatry, (ii) the nature of gods, and (iii) the nature of pagan worship. This article argues that purportedly secular concerns regarding paganism expressed by Deist and Enlightenment scholars were in fact rooted in Christian theology. This article is divided into four sections. The first section gives a general account of relevant discussions taking place in the seventeenth century. The second section discusses the father of English deism, Herbert of Cherbury, and his notion of paganism. The third section discusses Herbert’s successors. The fourth section discusses David Hume and his work on paganism. The article argues that internal theological concerns in the seventeenth and eighteenth century gave rise to a specific conceptual language used in thinking about and discussing paganism. This language was later adopted by contemporary Pagans in the twentieth and twenty first century. As such, the article argues, in any study of the phenomenon referred to as “paganism” the present framework inevitably leads one to theological questions and answers. As a result, while the discussion on paganism continues to be a theological one, the phenomenon being studied remains inaccessible.
