eng	"Dehumanizing the Human: W.H. Auden on Education, Humanity and Democracy."	Known primarily as a poet, W.H. Auden (1907-1973) was also a pedagogue. In the 1930s, while embarking on his poetic career, the young Oxford graduate taught at several public schools in Britain. Later in life, he lectured at different institutions and returned to Oxford in the 1950s as a Professor of Poetry. A prolific prose writer, Auden often reflected upon his interwar experience of Britain’s educational system. This paper will examine his 1930s concerns about the purpose and role of education in society, his views on the structure of the educational system and disquiet about the tension between the utilitarian and humanistic dimensions of the educational process. The presentation will gauge the extent to which Auden’s concerns concur with questions raised today.	W.H. Auden; education; educational system; humanism; public schools
