eng Hedging in Non-native Academic Writing The presentation is concerned with the use of hedging devices, focusing primarily on the role they play in academic discourse. It reviews different ways in which the term ‘hedge’ has been defined in the linguistic literature and identifies the major forms, functions and distribution of linguistic devices of hedging in order to explore their significance in interpreting research data in academic discourse. The presentation discusses the results of a small-scale study, based on a detailed examination of bachelor theses written by Czech students of English, which aims to present the overall occurrence of hedges in students’ writing with respect to both frequency and form of the employed hedge words. As hedges are generally considered to be an indispensable part of academic writing, the pilot study investigates whether Czech students use them appropriately and effectively to indicate their stance and hedge their commitment to the propositional content of the message, especially when presenting their findings. The results of the study also enable to revise the difficulties Czech students may encounter in acquiring the use of hedging devices in academic writing. hedging devices; academic discourse; non-native academic writing
