Description:
The project focuses on the issue of contraception in Czechoslovakia in the period from the 1950s to the 1990s, when there were fundamental changes in the state's approach to reproductive policy and a general reassessment of the role of contraception in society, which have not yet been sufficiently reflected in historical research. The beginning of the research period corresponds to the rise of the state's interest in contraception and its targeted promotion, linked to the decriminalisation of abortion in 1957, while the final period is defined by the transformation of health policy after 1989, when changes in the availability of contraception and the gradual liberalisation of the market took place. The aim of the research is to analyze contraception on several levels: as an instrument of state reproductive policy, as a market commodity in a centrally controlled economy, and as an everyday practice. The research will combine the analysis of archival sources with empirical investigation to provide a comprehensive view of the historical development of contraception in Czechoslovakia.
