British Ambassador Discussed Cooperation With the University of Pardubice

22. 5. 2019

Nicholas Stewart Archer, Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic, has met with the management of the University of Pardubice today to discuss the cooperation between Czech and UK scientists. His programme also included visits to the nanotechnology, electrical engineering and transportation departments, as well as planting an oak in the new university park.

“The scientific cooperation between the Czech Republic and the UK has been very active. More than a thousand British and Czech scientists cooperate on more than 380 joint projects in the Horizon 2020 project and publish more than thousand papers every year,” said Nick Archer, Her Majesty’s Ambassador.

Archer had been invited to Pardubice by Professor Jiří Málek, Rector, and has visited three out of seven university faculties. He showed interest in visiting nanotechnology, electrical engineering and transportation research labs. He visited the Center of Materials and Nanotechnologies of the Faculty of Chemical Technology, which has had a long-term cooperation with the UK in materials research.

“University of Pardubice is greatly interested in continuing, or expanding, the research and development cooperation with both the existing and new partners from the UK. I believe that the research cooperation and student exchanges will remain unaffected by the fact that the UK may leave the European Union,” said Prof. Ing. Jiří Málek, DrSc, Rector.

By way of example, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics of the University of Pardubice has intensive cooperation with the Lancaster University. Researchers from the Educational and Research Centre in Transport of the Jan Perner Faculty of Transport have completed a number of projects with the University of Sheffield. Other activities include study stays and internships for both students and teachers as part of the Erasmus+ programme; in addition, some ten students study at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) thanks to its cooperation with the Language Centre of the University of Pardubice.

The Ambassador planted an oak, a British national tree, in the new university park situated in the university campus. The visit to the University was followed by lunch with the Rector, Jiří Málek, and the Mayor of Pardubice, Martin Charvát, and by afternoon programme with Martin Netolický, President of the Region.
