eng The Role of Residential Schools in the Conception of the North Native American Identities, with an emphasus on the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) The role of residential schools in conception of the North Native American identities on an example of the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) identity Abstrakt orig.: The main purpose of this paper is to discover what is the role of school and education in forming of the Iroquois (group of the North Native Americans) identity. I will consider the following two areas: the school in general and the residential/boarding/industrial school in particular, in the following ways: the school as 1. an institution formed for educational and political goals in terms of contemporary political situation and ideology, 2. a place and a space, 3. a symbol and mettaranarrative. The basic question is: Has there been a different educational approach applied to the Iroquois in the U.S. and to the Iroquois in Canada? If so, how did it influence their conception of identity?
