eng Arab-Andalusian Berberophobia in the Convivencia theory In the mid-20th century, in his book España en su historia, Américo Castro presented the theory of Convivencia, i.e. the theory of the tolerant coexistence of Muslims, Christians and Jews in Muslim Spain – Al-Andalus. This theory, followed by many other authors, presents the Muslims of the medieval Iberian Peninsula as more tolerant individuals than was the case with other followers of Islam of the then Muslim world. This exceptionally tolerance policy was then to move from the Muslim part of the peninsula to the Christian one, where it was to be further developed. According to this theory, one of the main culprits in ending the Convivencia were supposed to be the North African Berbers, who (unlike the other Muslims of the peninsula) failed to integrate into the civilized culture of tolerance of Muslim Al-Andalus. For the authors representing and defending this theory, the main culprits in ending tolerance are members of the Maghreb Berber movements of the Almoravids and Almohads, as well as the Iberian Berbers themselves. The paper will focus on Berberophobic attitudes in Convivencia theory, their roots and subsequent persistence. Al-Andalus; Berberophobia; Convivencia; stereotypes; Muslim-Christian relationships
