eng Existential dialectics in San Manuel Bueno, mártir San Manuel Bueno, mártir is generally considered as Unamuno´s masterpiece which summarizes the most major ideas of his work. Above all, it represents his lifelong concern and anxiety about the problem of faith and immortality. There are two existential options concerning the religious question. First one is based on painful truth coming of the reason telling us that man is destined to die without any consolation, therefore the immortality of soul is only an illusion. The second option is illusory peace derived from the faith in God and eternal life. This way one lives contented life because of the hope. The character Don Manuel represents the first vital option of living which is the agony of the absence of faith, but he pretends to have one because he cares about the others and he does not want them to suffer the same way as he does, Unamuno; dialectics; existence; faith; reason
