This corruptions were fought against by Shramana and Bhakti movements, according to this explanation. But the close analyses of the works of early British Orientalists shows, how originally Christian theological questions shaped the interpretations of traditions in India as degenerated religion. It is necessary to start a new kind of research, which will focus on traditional understanding cathegories like varna and jati.
