eng	The Idea of the University: Obstacles nd Opportunities in Contemporary Societies	In the article “The Idea of the University: Obstacles and Opportunities in Contemporary Societies” Shils summarises Humboldt´s idea of the character and principles of university, its later establishment all over the world and its impending destruction today. The paper analyses changes in the society which Humboldt could not anticipate and which do not embrace the old ideal (e.g. the mass university, rising administration, new technology, the pressure of government, the different intellectual interests of contemporary people). Although Shils acknowledges some necessary changes must be done in our understanding of Humboldt´s pattern, he warns not to give up the unique pattern, because there is still an immense potential for future in it.
