The reflections are confronted with concepts of university by other authors (Oesterreich, Derrida a Rorty), as the quarrel detects issues of the idea of university at present. While Shils strictly separates the university campus with its spirit of searching for the truth from the world of everyday routine and care about living, the other authors deny such a detachment due to the necessity of public and political commitment of the university.
