eng “Everywhere else is America, but in this house it’s China!”: The Role of House and Street in American Female Ethnic Bildungsromane The chapter analyzes the role of houses and streets in a selection of postwar American novels which focus on the maturation of protagonists from various backgrounds–African-American, Barbadian-American, Chicana, and Chinese-American. Claiming that houses in these novels are spiritual rather than merely physical locations, the chapter points out that the house as a literary topos often becomes the site of the generational and cultural conflict in the immigrant family that complicates the growing up process of the protagonist. The street, on the other hand, is a topos that “metonymically refers to the outside world, the public world a child must grow into”. Reading the street as a sign of class-ridden public space, the author concludes that for lower class protagonists of the earlier works the street often represents a site of dangerous encounters reminding them of the limits of their racial and gender identity, while the affluent protagonist of more recent novel finds her suburban street liberal and safe.
