Treatise on Art and Artist in the German Literature of the 19th and 20th Centuries The terms "art" and "the problems and issues of an artist" as the leitmotifs of German literature has always been a broad discussion forum in the field of literary studies. The authors focus on the works of Wackenroder, Tieck, E. T. A. Hoffmann, Hofmannsthal, Thomas Mann, George and Hesse in this volume. They point out some of the most crucial moments of art and individuality of artist in the history of German literature of the 19th and 20th century. The freedom granted by the art, its significance and, last but not least, its role as the medium of communication act are an important basis for the self-definition of a creative individual across the border of literary fiction.
