eng “We don’t mix with boys like him”: Marginality in Michelle Magorian’s and Siobhan Dowd’s novels for young adults The fact that in a society certain individuals or groups can be situated on the margins and that their relationship with the mainstream society can be complicated and tenuous has been presented in literature for young adults for decades, very often with the didactic intention of raising awareness and sensitivity (as well as levels of understanding and tolerance) towards the marginalized. The paper will analyse how the issue is undertaken by two contemporary authors of children’s and teenage literature – in Michelle Magorian’s Just Henry (2008) and Siobhan Dowd’s Bog Child (2008). Both novels feature characters whose position either among the peers or in a larger community is uneasy but both handle the issue using different literary means and structures.
