Analýza obrazu Charlese Demuthe I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold ilustruje vztah mezi literaturou (poezií) a modernistickým malířstvím s jejich oslavou města. Obraz je zároveň chápán jako bod obratu směrem k vizuální reprezentaci lidské existence. americký modernismus; město; Charles Demuth; I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold; William Carlos Williams; Harte Crane
eng The Urban Energy of American Modernism: Charles Demuth´s Portrait of W.C. Williams The article attempts to show that although American modernism was deeply influenced by European avant-garde movements, it also drew significantly from local tradition, especially in its choice of and attitude to the subject matter, particularly the city and modern technologies. Drawing on the example of Charles Demuth’s famous painting I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold the article discusses intersections between literature (namely poetry) and modernist paintings and points to the similarities in their respect for and celebration of the urban. This key painting of the American modernist tradition is also viewed as representing the turn towards pictures, or even better to say towards making pictures into images which are to visualize our existence.
