eng	Approaches to learning in higher education: overview and critical analysis	This article summarises the theory of approaches to learning in higher education. After explaining the core distinction between deep and surface approaches the articles reviews related theoretical concepts: the SOLO taxonomy of learning outcomes, perceptions of the learning environment, conceptions of learning, conceptions of and approaches to teaching, disciplinary ways of thinking and practicing, threshold concepts and constructive alignment. By way of conclusion, the article discusses social-scientific criticisms of the individualistic limitations of this theory. These criticisms acknowledge the value of the approaches to learning theory but seek to re-contruct it by integrating into the more mainstream social-scientific research approaches.	approaches to learning; higher education; learning outcomes
