eng Speech, Writing and Thought Presentation: Ambiguities in Newspaper Reports The paper deals with ambiguities concerning direct forms of presentation reporting speech, writing and thought in the discourse of newspaper reports. It pays attention to free direct forms, direct forms and combinations of directly quoted discourse and non-direct forms or narration. The paper identifies various kinds of ambiguities and tries to account for their occurrence. The ambiguities discussed include ambiguities resulting from the coding conventions adopted for the analysis, contextual factors and ambiguities reflecting the generic and functional peculiarities of the newspaper report. Also, a few comments will be made on ambiguities involving pure non-direct forms. The presentation is based on the analysis of a corpus of British broadsheet newspapers.
