eng Reported Language in the Headline of Newspaper Reports The paper is concerned with the use of reported language in the initial stage of the generic structure of newspaper reports, namely the headline. First, attention will be paid to the generic function of the headline, especially in connection with its nuclear status at the textual and interpersonal level of discourse. Second, focus will be placed on formal, semantic and pragmatic characteristics of direct and indirect forms of presentation on speech, writing and thought scales. The functions of the identified forms of reported language will be interpreted in connection with the role the headline plays in the genre of newspaper reports. The presentation will be based on the corpus of headlines excerpted from British broadsheet newspapers. The generic analysis follows the approach developed by e.g. Feez, Iedema and White (1994) and White (1998) within the framework of Functional Systemic Linguistic; the analysis of reported language follows the categorization by e.g. Semino and Short (2004).
