The American historian Hayden White claims that the modes of modernist and postmodernist writing are much better suited to depict extreme events such as the Holocaust than the traditional realistic narrative. In accordance with his claim, the article shows how the postmodern technique of mixing the factual and the fictional and of combining various literary genres is successfully employed to address the troubling question of the theoretical possibility of an American Holocaust by Philip Roth in his novel The Plot Against America.
