eng German Studies as the Science on Borders Taking the criterion of geography into consideration, German studies can be seen as an interdisciplinary science or a borderland science. It is the science of and about a neighborhood. This statement applies particularly to German studies when studied in the Czech Republic, which neighbors are Austria, Bavaria and Saxony-Anhalt. As a borderland subject it has no clear outline, however, such orientation, as an addition to the existent one, wouldn’t be too far-fetched if we consider political, economic and cultural reasons. The University of Pardubice has been trying to deal with topics connected to the life on the periphery of Western Europe (Bavaria) by taking part in projects, writing publications, going to conferences and writing bachelor and master theses. Moreover, these activities have been a success despite the fact that they are not a part of the mainstream German studies and interests. The present paper provides an overview of topics which can be (due to their content) situated on the border, and they are simultaneously transcending it.
