eng	Literary Depiction of the Clash of Christianity and Native American Traditions	Christianity battled with various religious traditions on American soil since the first contact of Europeans and Native Americans and this battle has, naturally, entered American literature as one of its frequent topics. Using two very diverse literary examples the paper examines how the cultural and religious clash was reflected in literature and how it influenced literary imagination. The first is the famous seventeenth-century text of Indian captivity by Mary Rowlandson documenting the puritan representation of Native Americans as heathens or devils; the other is a postmodern novel by a mixed-blood (German-American and Ojibwe) author Louise Erdrich depicting internalized religious struggle of a bi-cultural character.	american literature; religious conflict; Christianity; Native American religions; Puritans; Mary Rowlandson; Louise Erdrich
