Různé jeho definice, ať už esenciální, či polytetické, vycházely z pojímání "náboženství" jako univerzální kategorie. Autoři jako W.C. Smith, F. Staal a S.N. Bálagangádhara ukazují neudržitelnost pojmu hinduismus a navrhují jiné způsoby, jak nahlížet na indické fenomény.
eng	Hinduism: Real Religion or Construct of the Colonial Scholarship?	Article follows the discussions about definition of Hinduism and shows, how much all definitions depend on pre-theoretical notions connected with the definition of religion as such. There are different essential definition, polythetic-prototypical definitions, and also attampts to define Hinduism as a culture. But all of them are rooted in the pre-theoretical notion of "religion" as universal cathegory. Authors such as W.C. Smith, F. Staal and S.N.
