The reason for the decline of this for centuries used practice was not easily to explain but it is reasonable to note such influences as the end of independence of particular poleis in Latium, Etruria and Campania and unprecedented Roman takeover of these regions. This process was not only political but religious as well and the population was moved to concentrate in more Roman and powerful cults. study of religion; religion; change; votive terracottas; Italy; archaeology
