Nejprve se soustředí obecně na teorii kánonu, vztahy mezi kánonem a mocí, školou, kritikou, čtenáři, apod. Dále mapuje vývoj a proměny amerického literárního kánonu v historické perspektivě od dob utváření samostatné americké literární tradice po současné hnutí za otevření kánonu. Práce dále analyzuje, jak se některá tematická kritéria jako je americtví, individualismus, identita podílela na proměnách kánonu. V závěru práce ilustruje teoretické vývody na příkladech kanonického statusu několika významných amerických literárních děl.
eng	Literature in America, America in Literature: American Literary Canon Formation	The book focuses on the American literary canon. At first it provides theories of literary canon, its relationship to power structures, the school/academia, criticism, to readers, tec. Then it outlines the formation and transformations of the American literary canon since the emergence of independent American literary tradition to the contemporary opening up of the canon movement. Then it analyzes thematic criteria that contributed to the canon formation process, such as the idea of Americannes, identity, individualism. The theory is then illustrated by examples of the changing canonical status of several important American novels.
