The Representation and Practice of Social Control in Late Medieval Urban Communities

Provider: Grantová agentura ČR
Programme: Standardní projekty
Implementation period: 01.01.20 - 30.06.23
Workplace: Fakulta filozofická - Ústav historických věd
Investigator: Čapský Martin
Team member: Kleinová Martina
Description:
The project deals with the formation of new political institutions in late medieval post-Hussite towns and their dual functions. On the one hand, the representatives of city quarters, parish settlements or guilds acquired the authority to more rigorously control city councils (for example, in the financial field), and on the other hand they themselves became instruments or even initiators of strengthening social control. A research starting point formulated in this way revises the dominant idea of the democratization tendencies in pre-Hussite towns. Using the example of late medieval towns, the project will analyse the relation between filling social space with political institutions that had some disciplinary potential and promoting increased social surveillance penetrating to the level of burgher households.
