Description:
Higher education is becoming increasingly important in knowledge societies and, simultaneously, undergoing a rapid and profound change. The present project will explore contemporary transformations of higher education from below through ethnographic studies of university departments. Conceptually, it will be framed by theories of massification of higher education and of academic capitalism which it will strive to further develop and critically revise. Research team members will conduct ethnographic fieldwork at five departments selected to represent the diversity within Czech higher education, exploring how the contemporary transformations of higher education play out in the concrete practices of higher education: teaching, learning, research and knowledge transfer. The project will build on results of two recently completed research projects conducted by the members of the research team: an ethnography of Czech science in flux (Stöckelová 2009) and a survey of transformations of Czech higher education from elite to mass to universal higher education (Prudký, Pabian, Šima 2010
